Favourite Finds: Frederika

Continuing our spotlight series called Favourite Finds, we ask some of our favourite DJs, collectors and selectors to tell us the story behind how they came across one of their most cherished records.

For the next instalment, we’ve asked DJ, radio host and digger, Frederika to give us an insight into a special record from her collection.

London-based but originally from Bulgaria Frederica’s genre-bending sets have graced the soundsystems of many of London’s most coveted venues. Holding down residencies at Brilliant Corners and The Tent (at The End of The Universe), she’s also a Lost Village Festival resident and has played the San Remo stage at Glastonbury. Her sets are filled with hypnotic percussion and bass heavy music from around the world ranging from new age and jazz to electro and new beat. It’s a style and sound that have seen her regularly appear on NTS alongside hosting her monthly show, Flowing Under, on Radio Raheem.

"I’ve always had an affinity for music from the '60s and '70s and a year ago I became obsessed with music from the time that had classical Indian influences. I then started researching more contemporary songs that were featuring sitars and tablas and even did a special on NTS Radio with that theme.

Around that time I discovered the work of Sheila Chandra and loved everything I found that she was involved in, but my search definitely culminated in the Ben Chapman remix of 'Ever So Lonely'. It turned me on to downtempo music and inspired me to start building sets that don’t go above 110 BPM but still do great in a club setting. It’s only 70ish BPM but whenever I want to make it clear to the dancefloor that the party’s really starting I put on that record. I always have at least one person come up to me to ask for the ID.

It’s dirt cheap and I've never heard anyone playing it either on radio or at a party so it’s definitely one of those underrated tunes that I’ve found that instantly turns heads and eases in the dancers. It made me reconsider the flow of my sets and turned me on to slower, more hypnotic music and finding ways to incorporate that mood for the late hours."

Big thanks to Frederika for telling us the story behind this find. Be sure to give her a follow on instagram and soundcloud to keep up with all her latest gigs and radio shows.
